今天,很少有美國人能辨識這份清單上的植物,但是在十九世紀初,原住民很熟悉這些植物,而且每一種的用途都非常豐富。

放棄這片土地,讓世世代代累積起來的植物知識得毫無用處,會帶來極大的風險。有一份研究判定,在七百三十九種對契羅基文化有重大意義的植物中,像是弗吉尼亞松、沙山核桃、黃花菸草、侏儒人參、美國甘松、毛山薄荷等等,有超過百分之三十在印地安領地是找不到的。只舉一個例子就好:巨竹。這種植物在俄克拉何馬州的數量,比在東南部少上許多,因為俄克拉何馬州是巨竹在西邊的生極限。南方原住民拿它來蓋屋、建造圍籬、做為飼料、製作捕捉物和魚類的陷阱、用種子磨、製造家、編織蓆墊和籃子、製造樂器、製作舟筏,以及治療各種病。在歐洲人的武器出現,他們還用它製造武器和盔甲。在西方,少了這個如此重要的材料,原住民將被迫重建自己的生活。38
